Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Tahini Stuffed Chocolate Covered Dates are going to be your new favourite treat! When you bite into one you’ll think you’re eating a chocolate bar. Tahini stuffed dates are truly delicious. The nutty and slightly savoury flavour of tahini really balances the sweetness and caramel flavour of the Medjool date. All of this is enrobed in chocolate and topped with sesame seeds and shredded coconut. They really remind me of a Snickers bar. So good!

Tahini Stuffed Dates are a sweet snack or dessert made with only four ingredients. Fill a Medjool date with sesame seed butter (aka tahini) and then dip it in chocolate. So simple, and really, doesn't that sound too good?

Nutritional Benefits of Tahini

Tahini has many nutritional benefits. It is an excellent source of manganese and phosphorus. It is also high in vitamin B1 and B6. Tahini is rich in antioxidants and contains anti-inflammatory compounds (Nutrition Information sourced from Healthline).

Nutritional Benefits of Medjool Dates

Medjool dates are rich in fibre and a good source of iron, copper, b vitamins and magnesium. Medjool dates are high in several antioxidants that protect your body from oxidative stress. Medjool dates provide a quick source of energy which makes them a popular snack choice for athletes. (Nutrition information sourced from Healthline). I highly recommend my recipe for Date Paste as a delicious spread for toast.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is tahini?

Tahini is a seed butter made from toasted, ground, hulled sesame seeds. It’s delicious and has a nutty, slightly savoury flavour that is hard to describe but so delicious.

Can these treats be frozen?

Yes! They keep really well in the freezer. The sugar content in dates prevents them from getting too hard when frozen so you can eat them directly from the freezer.

More Topping and Filling Options

  • Crushed pretzels
  • Crushed nuts like pecans or pistachios
  • Drizzle of white chocolate
  • Sesame seeds
  • Shredded coconut
  • Flaky salt
  • Add a pecan or almond inside the date for added crunch
  • Add a little jam to the filling
  • Try other nut or seed butters like peanut butter, almond butter or sunflower seed butter

How to Make Stuffed Dates

Begin by removing the seeds of the dates by cutting a slit along one side of the date. Place the pitted dates on a large plate or baking sheet.

Fill the center of the date with about ½ to 1 teaspoon of tahini, however much will fit! Place these tahini filled dates in the freezer.

Meanwhile, melt the chocolate chips with coconut oil on the stove in a double boiler over medium-low heat. Use oven mitts if the side of the bowl is warm to the touch.  (Instructions for a double boiler: Fill a saucepan with several inches of water and place a heat safe mixing bowl over the saucepan in order to melt your chocolate.)

Stir until the chocolate is fully melted and remove from the heat. Let the chocolate cool slightly so it won’t be too hot for your fingers as you dip the dates.

Dip your tahini stuffed dates in the chocolate and sprinkle with desired toppings. Place them in the fridge to cool until the chocolate is set.

These treats last in the fridge for up to a week and store well in the freezer for several months. Enjoy!

Tips for Making The Best Stuffed Dates

  • It’s really important to ensure the tahini is well stirred. Tahini can be thinner and more oily at the top of the jar and you really want the tahini to be well stirred and thick so it will stay put in the centre of the date.
  • Keep this snack in the refrigerator so the chocolate doesn’t melt. Serve them chilled.
  • Kids love to help with making this treat. Little kids can help with sprinkling shredded coconut and sesame seeds on top of the dates after they’ve been dipped in chocolate. Older kids love to help with the messy part of dipping the date in the melted chocolate.
  • Purchasing quality tahini and quality chocolate will make a big taste difference in this recipe. A good time to treat yourself to the good stuff!
